Hi Hope you had a good weekend! We kept it simple for our Yule celebrations this year - our home made Yule log was made with 2 sticks we found in the New Forest, a candle, ribbons and some fallen branches from the evergreen tree in the garden. You'll find little decorations of goats hanging from Christmas trees in the homes of people from Scandinavia. These Yule Goats have survived from pre-Christian times where the Norse god Thor rode across the sky in a chariot drawn by 2 goats. These were no ordinary goats - Thor was able to eat these magic animals, put the skin and bones together then the very next day the goats would be back to normal! Now the Yule Goat carries the Yule Elf when he makes his rounds to deliver presents and receive his offering of porridge from children in Scandinavia. The Yule Goat has had several different job descriptions throughout the ages. In Finland, the Yule Goat was said to be a hideous creature that frightened children into giving it gifts at Yule time. In other parts of Scandinavia the Yule Goat was an invisible creature who would appear sometime before Christmas to make sure all the preparations were done right. It was during the 19 century when the Yule Goat became the giver of Christmas gifts. It was tradition for one of the men in a family to dress up as the Yule Goat and give out presents.
