How fast does the space shuttle have to go to leave the earth’s atmosphere?

The space shuttle has to accelerate 2,000 mph every minute for the first eight minutes of its journey to leave Earth’s atmosphere.

In terms of speed, from liftoff to exiting Earth’s atmosphere, the shuttle goes from 0 to 17,500 mph.
