Is a Sweet Potato the Same As a Yam?

Though Americans often call a sweet potato a yam, the two vegetables are not the same.

Sweet potatoes are grown in the United States and in many other countries. But a real yam grows only in the tropical regions of Africa, and is almost never seen in America.

So the next time you enjoy "candied yams," you can be sure you're really eating sweet potatoes!
