Was It Ever Illegal To Wear Make-up?

The English in the late 1700s frowned upon women wearing make-up for the effect it would have on men.

And so, in 1770, a bill was introduced into Parliament stating that, “All women of any age or rank who shall lure into marriage any of His Majesty’s subjects by scents, paints, cosmetics, artificial teeth, false hair, shall incur the penalty of the law in force against witchcraft.”
