Some eighteen zones and belts can be identified by their different colors, brightness, spots, and rotation periods.
Zones are dark bands; belts are bright bands.
The main two are the North Equatorial Belt, at approximately 7° to 20° latitude, and the South Equatorial Belt, at approximately –7° to –21° latitude.
Both change in width, with the southern belt being the more variable one.
The clouds on Jupiter are blown into bands by 350mph winds caused by Jupiter’s rapid rotation.
