What Fortress Was Built on Solid Gold?

In 1290, an Indian rajah decided to build a fortress near the city of Poona. But his engineers told him that the site of the planned fortress was so swampy that the building would sink into the ground.

Then the rajah had a dream. In his dream, the gateway of the fortress was built on a foundation of gold. When the rajah awoke, he ordered his engineers to build the foundation of solid gold!

So, workers dug two 12-foot-deep holes in the ground and filled them with about 50,000 gold bricks. Then they built the gateway on top of the gold.

This gateway, called the Purandhar Gate, still stands. And at today’s prices, the gold buried under the gateway is worth over $120 million!
