Vatican City, the home of the pope, is an enclave completely surrounded by the city of Rome. It's the smallest independent nation on earth. Independent since 1929, Vatican City has its own flag, national anthem, postage stamps, radio station, and newspaper.

Yet its total area is just .17 square miles, less than 109 acres! The second smallest nation on earth, Monaco, is more than four times the size of Vatican City!
