What Plant Has the Largest Seeds?

The Seychelles coconut, found only in the Seychelles Islands near Africa, produces the largest seeds in the plant kingdom. The fruit of this palm tree looks like two coconuts joined together — the reason for its other name, the "double coconut."

Because the coconut contains just one seed, scientists consider the entire fruit to be the seed of the plant. A double coconut may take ten years to develop, and by the time it falls from a tree, it could be 18 inches long and weigh 40 pounds!

Many Seychelles coconut trees grow near the sea, and some of the coconuts fall into the ocean and float away. Double coconuts have been known to wash up on shores far from the Seychelles Islands. So, the huge seed of this tree is also known as the "coconut of the sea."
