What started the Hatfield-McCoy Family Feud during The American Civil War?

There was already a great deal of tension between the two families about big issues and small, including some conflicting loyalties in America’s Civil War.

The families involved in the feud descended from Ephraim Hatfield and William McCoy.

The feud started when Asa Harmon McCoy was murdered on January 7, 1865. The despise for Harmon was because he joined the Union Army.

It came to a head after a McCoy accused a Hatfield of stealing one of his razorback hogs.

The families finally agreed to stop the fighting in 1891.

It was yet another war started by a pig.
