Evidence of the earliest life on earth has been found in fossils dating back about 3.5 billion years, in the Precambrian era.
The fossils are of microscopic plantlike single cells called blue-green algae, similar to bacteria today.
Life, as we know it, did not exist before there was water, so sometime between 4.2 billion years ago (when scientists estimate water began to form on Earth) and 3.5 billion years ago, life began.
