Where Did the Grapefruit Come From?
The grapefruit really has nothing to do with the grape. The grapefruit got its name soon after it was discovered because some people thoUght it tasted like grapes.
Grapefruits were first found growing on the island of Jamaica, in the Caribbean. But today, the state of Florida produces about 70 percent of all the world’s grapefruits.
Some scientists think the grapefruit may have been born as a cross between the orange and the pummelo, a fruit that grows in Southeast Asia. Many citrus fruits crossbreed with one another. The tangelo, for instance, is really a cross between the grapefruit and the tangerine.
A single grapefruit tree can produce more than 1,500 pounds of fruit!
