Taken directly from the French vinaigrette, “vinegar sauce,” a condiment prepared with vinegar, from vinaigre, “vinegar.”
The word vinaigrette, though, became transferred to the container rather than to the sauce, and to similar containers, finally being settled on a container of smelling salts.
