Where Is a Perfumed Tower?

In the city of Marrakesh, Morocco, there’s a 220-foot tower that’s more unusual for its appeal to the nose than to the eye! This tower, the Koutoubiya minaret, gives off a fragrance that seems to come right out of its walls.

And that’s exactly where it does come from. When the minaret was built in 1195, about 950 sacks of musk, a perfume made from animal secretions, were mixed into the cement used on the tower.

The fragrance of that musk can still be enjoyed today, almost 800 years later!
