Which Birds Are Able To Use Tools?
There are some birds that are able to use tools to find food.
The Egyptian vulture uses stones to smash open ostrich eggs. Some birds, such as seagulls, drop clams from a great height to open them, but the Egyptian vulture has a better way. The vulture picks up a rock in its beak and throws it down on the ostrich egg to open it.
Another amazing bird is the Galapagos Island finch. This small bird uses a twig to poke into a hole in a tree where insects have bored. The stick makes the insects leave the hole and come out where the bird can eat them.
It has been reported that the bird will often strip the leaves off the twig before it uses it. This means that the finch not only uses a tool, but makes it as well.
