Antarctica gets less precipitation than any other continent on earth, and is the Driest Continent In the world. It averages less than ten inches of snow, the same as one inch of rain, a year.
Its average winter temperature is minus 94 degrees F., and 100-mile-an-hour winds are an everyday occurrence. Two-hundred-mile-an-hour winds are frequent. The ice that covers 98 percent of this strange continent holds 90 percent of the world’s fresh water.
Except for the sea life active at its northerly borders, there is almost no life on this frozen bottom of the world. Inside rocks where it is slightly warmer, microscopic forms of life can be found.
There is one wingless insect that will occasionally scoot across the frozen wastes.
