Why Are The Beaches Of Florida Disappearing?
Yes. Many of the beaches on Florida’s east coast, which fronts on the Atlantic Ocean, are actually disappearing.
They are being washed away by hurricane winds and waves. Not long ago, Miami had beautiful wide beaches all day long. Now, the only time Miami has beaches is when the tide is out, meaning at low tide.
Sand being blown and washed away is not new. It happens all the time. Florida’s beaches used to get the sand that was blown away from the beaches of Georgia and South and North Carolina.
That sand has stopped coming because conservation groups in those states are making a big effort to keep their sand in place.
So poor Florida is losing sand and not getting any to replace it.
