Why Do Some Prey Live Close to Their Predators?
Rabbits and foxes have lived very close to each other.
This has been known to happen when a rabbit’s home is very close to the home of a fox. Few animals hunt for food near home. Most have an area they use as a regular feeding ground, and it is always a considerable distance from their den or nest.
Any animal that lives close to its enemies will be much safer than one that lives farther away. Even human hunters go away from home when hunting, and the animals they are planning to shoot would be much safer if they were living under the house of the hunter or very close to his home.
In England, there is a record of a fox that lived a long life right nest to a kennel full of fox hounds. Never once did a single dog pay a bit of attention to the fox next-door.
