Why Does The Dipper Bird Walk Underwater?
To find his dinner. This amazing little bird will dive right into a stream and walk in water over its head hunting for food. When the dipper does this, it is protected from enemies, although the bird does have to come up for air every minute or so.
The dipper has another very interesting habit. It builds its nest behind a waterfall. Why? The dipper has learned from experience that most birds and other creatures are afraid of waterfalls.
Few predators will risk the crashing sound or the moving water to steal an egg or a baby bird. You have to give the dipper credit. It has found an amazing way to protect its family and itself.
A raging waterfall is a wonderful barrier of protection!
