Why Is Mount McKinley Also Called Denali and Who Is Mount McKinley Named After?

Denali is the ancient Indian name for Mount McKinley, meaning “The Great One” or “The High One.”

It is in Denali National Park and Preserve, about 130 miles (209 km) north of Anchorage, Alaska.

The mountain was renamed for President McKinley in 1896.

Mount McKinley is a granitic pluton which has been uplifted by tectonic pressure, and five large glaciers flow off the slopes of the mountain.
