Why Is The Seychelles Coconut Known As The Coconut Of The Sea?
The Seychelles coconut grows on palm trees that are found only in the Seychelles, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean.
The Seychelles coconut is sometimes called the “double coconut” because it looks like two coconuts joined together. It’s also known as the coco de mer, or “coconut of the sea,” as some of these coconuts fall from trees into the ocean and are carried by the sea to distant shores.
The Seychelles coconut takes about ten years to ripen and may measure 18 inches in length when ripe. Since it contains only a single seed, some scientists consider the coconut itself to be a seed.
That makes the Seychelles coconut the largest seed on earth. These “double coconuts” may weigh more than 40 pounds, and some have weighed as much as 50 pounds!
