In the United Staes, the average licensed driver drives about 12,500 miles a year.
This varies from person to person, of course, but it also fluctuates dramatically from state to state, from a high of 19,400 in Wyoming to a low of 8,950 in Alaska.
By its size and the amount of space between towns, you might think that, like Wyoming, Alaska would also have a higher rate of driving.
The fact is, though, you can’t get too far in a car in Alaska, most cities have roads in their immediate area, but they don’t connect to one another.
For example, you can travel all the roads in Juneau, the state capital, and you still won’t get more than eight miles from downtown.
If you want to go farther, you have to use a boat or plane.
