There are no active volcanoes, but Capulin Mountain is an impressive example of an extinct volcano that blew its top about 62,000 years ago.
The event was quite recent from a geologist’s point of view.
Capulin Mountain stands 8,182 feet (2,494 m) above sea level and rises about 1,300 feet (396 m) above the surrounding plain.
Other extinct volcanoes and ancient lava flows in the region remind us that this region was once a violent place.
Capulin Mountain is one of the few extinct volcanoes in the world that visitors can walk into.
