What Are the Pros and Cons of Purchasing a Townhouse?

Townhouses are great starter homes for those who cannot afford a single-family home right now. Because of a smaller yard, you probably will have less outside upkeep. Some townhouse communities also provide a certain amount of upkeep to the grounds and exterior of the property. Townhouse communities usually have amenities such as a clubhouse, pool, parks, and other common areas for everyone to enjoy.

On the con side, your townhouse will share at least one, and maybe two, walls with another townhouse. If you do not like having neighbors so close, a townhouse is not for you. Recently an owner of a townhouse was ordered by a court not to smoke inside the townhouse because the smell was causing the owner next door to have an allergic attack. Also, your parking maybe limited to a certain number of spots due to the congestion of people in one area.

Another factor in a townhouse is the homeowners’ association and the required dues. You will be paying for that outside upkeep of your area and for the upkeep of the amenities through your dues to the homeowners’ association. If one of the amenities needs an unanticipated repair or some unexpected maintenance issue pops up, the dues will significantly increase.
