An asteroid is a meteoroid specifically orbiting the Sun between Jupiter and Mars.
Asteroids are bigger than meteoroids. They measure up to 500 miles (805 kilometers) in diameter. Some observers believe asteroids may be the remains of a planet that disintegrated.
Others think the fragments may have been left over after the planets formed more than 4.6 billion years ago.
