Who Was the Inspiration for Garfield the Cat and When Was the Comic Strip Created?

Jim Davis’s grandfather, James Garfield Davis, was the inspiration for Garfield the cat.

He was in Davis’s own words, “big, opinionated, and stubborn.”

The Garfield comic strip was first published on June 19, 1978, and chronicles the life of Garfield the cat, his owner Jon Arbuckle, and Arbuckle’s dog Odie.

Garfield’s is known for his obsessive eating, laziness, and hatred of Mondays.
