There are genetic risks of passing on depression, but pregnancy is more than a question of genetics. The world desperately needs more honest, sincere, loving people. Will your child be able to feed on your love and return it to others throughout his or her life? Meditate on these issues, pray, or talk to the people whose advice you trust the most. Most of all, you must look inside your heart for the answer. Depression should not stop you from having a child if you are ready for the burdens and rewards of parenthood.
Remember, your children may or may not develop unipolar major depression. If they do, your depression gives you the ideal understanding and ability to give them the extra help, nurturance, and early treatment they need to ameliorate the effects of depression later in life.
